In 2022, Yasmine Elmi launched the Hike for Girls’ Education initiative and, alongside Jasmine Candeliere, set out on an unforgettable journey to Mount Everest Base Camp, 5,364 metres above sea level. Known as one of the world’s most demanding treks, this challenge was more than just physical, it was a powerful statement in support of girls’ education.

As they announced at the beginning of the challenge:

“Each mile we hike is to support AKHRI, an organization that advocates on behalf of women in Canada and Africa. All proceeds will bring textbooks and writing materials to young girls. We are determined to prove that by taking this goal one step at a time, we can gain the momentum needed to provide these young women with educational tools and an environment to thrive intellectually and professionally.”

Their goal, launched on International Women’s Day, was to raise $10,728, symbolizing the 5,364m they each would climb. In the end, they exceeded expectations, raising over $12,000 and inspiring hundreds.

With breathtaking views and brave hearts, they carried AKHRI’s mission through snow, altitude, and exhaustion—all to ensure women and girls could rise through literacy. And yes, they had their well-deserved moment at the base of the world’s highest mountain.
